Guide

Common Dose

Your guide to a standard sacramental experience

What Is a Common Dose?

This guide covers perceivable, intense, and profound doses of psilocybin mushrooms. These are full sacramental experiences, distinct from microdosing, and require preparation, intention, and a safe setting.

There are two ways to determine your dose:

  • Traditional method: dosing by dry weight of mushrooms (0.5g to 5g dried).
  • New dosage standard: calculating the exact milligrams of psilocybin using our Dosage Calculator. This requires lab-tested mushrooms listed in the calculator.

If you do not have lab-tested mushrooms, start small and refer to traditional dosage standards. If you have never worked with increasing doses, please increase slowly and in small amounts. See our guides on potency and new dosage standards for more detail.

Dosage Ranges

Traditional Method (Dry Weight)

  • Perceivable: 0.5g to 1.5g dried mushrooms
  • Intense: 1.5g to 3.5g dried mushrooms
  • Profound: 3.5g to 5g dried mushrooms

New Standard (Psilocybin Content)

  • Common doses range from 1,000 mcg to 15,000 mcg of pure psilocybin for a person weighing 100 lbs.
  • A 200 lb person would need approximately double these amounts.

Dosage varies based on body weight and mushroom potency. Always start at the low end if you are new to sacramental work.

Preparation

Timing

Effects typically begin 30 to 60 minutes after ingestion, depending on stomach contents and method of consumption. The full experience lasts 4 to 6 hours. Clear your schedule for at least 10 to 24 hours. Do not drive. Do not work. Avoid stressful situations.

Intention

Know why you are working with this sacrament. Meditate on an intention that will bring meaning and growth to your life or faith. Write it down and return to it in the days before your experience. Hold it gently during the journey itself.

See our guide on The Power of Intention for more on this practice.

Set and Setting

Setting is the physical environment: your bedroom, a ceremony space, a quiet place in nature. It includes everything physically present: music, lighting, candles, blankets, and the people around you.

Set is your internal state. It has two parts: who you are (your personality, fears, desires, and passions) and the attitude you bring into the experience (your mindset, expectations, and intentions).

Recommended Method: Tea

Tea is the recommended method of consuming sacramental mushrooms. To prepare:

  1. Weigh your mushrooms carefully.
  2. Crush in a bag or grind to increase surface area.
  3. Steep in hot (not boiling) water for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Strain out the mushroom material.
  5. Add honey, ginger, or your favorite tea bag for taste.

Other methods include smoothie, chewing, or swallowing whole. Tea is preferred because it is gentler on the stomach and allows for faster, more predictable onset.

Having a Good Experience

Start small and increase dosing slowly over time. Once you consume a dose, you cannot reduce or lessen its effects for the duration of the experience.

During Your Journey

  • Music: Choose instrumental, calm, meditative music. Avoid lyrics. Do not loop or repeat tracks.
  • Mindset: Maintain a positive, open state. Do not be stressed or anxious going in.
  • Environment: Be in a safe, comfortable space, ideally at home or in nature, with a sober person who can care for you.
  • Surrender: Do not resist the experience. Allow it to unfold naturally.

Afterward

Eat a good meal after your experience. Do not go to bed hungry. Take time in the following days to reflect and integrate what you experienced.

Preventing Difficult Experiences

  • Maintain a positive mindset and meditative awareness
  • Know and accept the effects before you begin
  • Do not take more than you are ready for
  • Avoid stressful situations and environments
  • Stay hydrated throughout
  • Be in a comfortable, familiar space
  • Have a sober, caring guide present
  • Play relaxing, instrumental music
  • Engage in gentle, enjoyable activities

Managing Difficult Moments

If you or someone you are guiding encounters a difficult moment during the experience:

  • Talk about what is causing stress; do not suppress it
  • Shift focus to something calming or grounding
  • Move to a more comfortable space if needed
  • Play calming music
  • Eat something light if feeling woozy or lightheaded
  • Remember: the experience will shift, and it will end
  • A calming indica sacrament can help reduce anxiety if necessary
