DMT Safety
Essential safety information for DMT sacraments
What Is DMT?
DMT, or N,N-dimethyltryptamine, is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found throughout nature. It is the primary active ingredient in ayahuasca, the traditional South American brew used for spiritual purposes across many cultures.
- Depending on how it is manufactured or extracted, DMT can appear as crystals, powder, or a soft clumpy material. It often has a yellow-orange or brownish color and a distinctive odor similar to mothballs or shoe leather.
- Ayahuasca is prepared by boiling a DMT-containing plant together with a second plant containing a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as harmaline. The resulting brew is consumed orally.
- DMT is broken down in the stomach if consumed orally without an MAOI.
- Crystallized DMT is most commonly vaporized. Direct flame can destroy the compound, so controlled-temperature methods are preferred.
Effects of DMT
Inhaled DMT
- Effects are felt within seconds, with peak effects lasting about 5 to 15 minutes.
- Smaller amounts can produce mild perceptual shifts such as color enhancement and light visual patterns.
- Larger or multiple inhalations can produce profound experiences, including visiting other realms and encountering beings or entities.
- A full detachment from ordinary reality is sometimes described as “blasting off.” These experiences can be deeply inspiring and transformative, or they can be overwhelming and frightening.
- Total ego dissolution (“ego death”) is common at higher amounts, in which the sense of time stops and all feeling of separateness from the universe dissolves.
- There is usually an abrupt return to baseline after 5 to 15 minutes, although brief re-immersions can occur during the comedown period.
Oral DMT (Ayahuasca)
- Effects are felt within 20 to 60 minutes and last 2 to 6 hours.
- Dosage depends on the plants used and the person administering the brew.
- Lingering after-effects can last for several additional hours.
Typical Amounts
A common amount of inhaled DMT ranges from 10mg to 100mg (0.01g to 0.1g). While many people do not measure precisely, doing so is strongly recommended for safety and consistency.
- If vaporizing DMT from a pen, the intensity depends on how long you draw, how deeply you hold the vapor in your lungs, and how long you hold it.
- Most people take two or three full inhalations to reach the full experience, but one large inhalation can be sufficient.
- Holding the vapor in as long as possible is generally the most important (and most difficult) part of reaching the full experience.
Critical Safety Warnings
- Rapid onset and extreme intensity: Do not be fooled by the short duration. DMT is one of the most powerful psychedelic sacraments available. The speed at which the experience begins can be overwhelming.
- Psychological risk: People who have personal or family histories of mood or psychotic disorders may be at increased risk of psychological distress.
- Do not inject DMT. This route carries serious additional risks and is strongly discouraged.
- Never use DMT while standing, driving, or operating machinery. You will lose contact with your physical surroundings almost immediately.
- Have a sitter present. A trusted, sober person should be with you during the experience, especially for larger amounts.
Interaction Warnings
DMT and especially ayahuasca can interact dangerously with certain compounds. Review these carefully before any experience:
- MAOIs and SSRIs: Combining ayahuasca (which contains MAOIs) with SSRIs or other serotonergic compounds can trigger serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition. If you take any antidepressant or psychiatric medication, consult a knowledgeable practitioner before working with ayahuasca.
- Stimulants: Amphetamines, MDMA, and similar compounds should not be combined with MAOIs.
- Tyramine-rich foods: When working with ayahuasca, avoid aged cheeses, cured meats, fermented foods, and alcohol for at least 24 hours before and after the experience.
- Heart conditions: DMT can temporarily elevate heart rate and blood pressure. Those with cardiovascular concerns should exercise caution.
Set and Setting
“Set” refers to your mental state: your thoughts, mood, expectations, and intentions. “Setting” refers to the physical and social environment where the sacrament is used.
Being in a calm mental state, with trusted people in a supportive environment, significantly reduces the risk of a difficult experience. Prepare your space, set a clear intention, and make sure you will not be interrupted.
For DMT specifically, have a comfortable place to lie down. You will likely be unable to move or respond to your surroundings during the peak of the experience.
Integration
DMT experiences can be among the most profound and disorienting of any sacrament. Integration, the process of making sense of your experience afterward, is essential.
- Give yourself time after the experience before returning to normal activities.
- Write down or record what you remember as soon as you are able. Details fade quickly.
- Talk to trusted friends, community members, or a professional integration therapist if the experience was challenging.
- Do not rush into another experience. Allow time for reflection and grounding.
